"Celebration Turtle" Crochet Pattern
"Celebration Turtle" Crochet Pattern
As New Year approaches, you may encounter the traditional straw craft "Celebration Turtle" more frequently.
The first time I laid eyes on the "Celebration Turtle," I was captivated by its dignified aura and splendid design.
In Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture, where celebratory turtles made of straw craft are crafted, the celebratory turtle serves as a separate auspicious decoration from the New Year decorations. It is said to be displayed within reach throughout the year, not limited to the New Year's season.
It is mentioned that many people often renew their celebratory turtles to coincide with the New Year, so I tried creating the coveted celebratory turtle using familiar materials and crochet.
This particular piece is crafted using summer yarn.
You can make it with just one ball of MARCHENART's Manila Hemp Yarn, so if you have yarn in stock, be sure to give it a try.
The yarn quantity can be easily adjusted to fit within one ball.
I chose the color "Matcha" for this project, which is a shade slightly darker than the green of traditional straw crafts.
Since straw crafts tend to evolve into a color reminiscent of straw hats over time, you might consider choosing a yarn color with a similar effect.
By the way, the wheat-colored item in the image below was crocheted using DARUMA's SASAWASHI. It also exudes a cute and natural vibe.
This creation combines elements of crocheting and handicraft, allowing you to complete it in a short amount of time.
The crochet parts are worked in a pattern similar to "basket stitch." Basket stitch itself is somewhat challenging to crochet (not recommended for beginners), but I've made a few adjustments, so please keep that in mind.
Given the smaller stitch count and fewer rows to crochet, if you feel motivated to give it your best shot, I encourage you to take on the challenge!
The size of this work is 7.9"(20 cm) in height.
A crocheted "Celebration Turtle" also makes for a stylish wall decoration in your living space.
Why not create your own unique New Year's ornament with a touch of craftsmanship?
