"Crossed Waffle Shawl" Crochet Pattern
"Crossed Waffle Shawl" Crochet Pattern
This crochet shawl features a three-dimensional waffle-like texture and lace accents. It’s a project that I’ve also used as part of a workshop.
The waffle pattern uses a special stitch, so I’ve prepared a video tutorial for you. As you watch the video, try working through a few rows to get the hang of it.
As you continue crocheting, you’ll get the feel for the pattern, and as the fabric starts to take shape, it will become easier and more enjoyable to work on.
Once you’re used to it, you’ll be able to move forward without constantly checking the pattern. As you work, you’ll find a rhythm, and the interplay between the stitches will guide you naturally through the pattern.
That said, it seems this project might be a bit confusing for beginners. Therefore, it is best suited for those who are already familiar with reading crochet diagrams.
For this shawl, I used Isager’s MERILIN yarn, which is 80% wool and 20% linen. The linen adds a rustic texture in places, giving the shawl a unique nuance.
I instantly fell in love with the deep brick-red color and chose this shade for the shawl. There are many other beautiful colors available, so I encourage you to check out the full lineup.
The yarn is wonderfully plump, doesn’t split, and is very easy to work with—highly recommended!
A limited number of kits that include the MERILIN yarn and a printed version of the pattern are available at Eylul yarns, where I held the workshop in Osaka. I’ll include a link at the bottom of this page.
As I mentioned earlier, there’s a unique stitch in the main body, but the edging, although simple, also uses a slightly unusual stitch.
I’ve included a video tutorial for that as well, so feel free to refer to it.
Initially, I tried using a bold edging, but it didn’t suit the shawl—haha.
In the end, I went with a subtle edging, which is more to my usual taste.
This shawl, with its rich texture, will give you a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction once completed.
It’s the perfect project for cozy autumn evenings!
